How to Get Home from Mexico Part 1

We did the Baja Ha Ha in 2021 and cruised Mexico for the first half of 2022. The boat was placed on the hard and we needed to head home to look for land. We could have flown home but with the dog and a bunch of luggage we thought it would be better to drive home.

San Carlos, Sonora MX is about 5 hours taxi ride from the border at Nogales AZ and “only” about $300 for the taxi. It was decided to take the taxi so we were on a quest to find luggage for all our stuff. Being on foot we needed wheels and enough room for our junk.

Looking around we discovered that luggage was actually a costly item and not al that sturdy. Then it hit us – where to you put junk? In a garbage can of course! Off we went to the local Walmart and soon found some nice sized Rubbermaid garbage cans with sturdy wheels. And the price was right, about $20 each.

We loaded up the cans and also 2 stand up paddleboard backpacks and hopped into the taxi for the ride to the border.

The taxi dropped us off on the Mexico side and we shouldered our packs and with the dog in tow wheeled our garbage cans to the Nogales-Morley Gate Port of Entry. The hardest part was getting our cans through the rotating metal one-way gate but that was soon achieved.

Passports presented, faces scanned and it was soon our turn to have our “luggage” inspected. The officer took one look at us and smiled saying that now he had seen everything and that we had basically made his day. The usual questions were asked, the cans were not sealed so the hinged lids were easy to open and soon we were back in the USA.

It is out of the water and on stands. We will be heading back in a month or few to sail it back home.
