A new home even if it is 82 years old has new sounds. Things that go bump in the night and you wrack your brain trying to figure out what they are. This is just such a story.
It was snowing a lot. The first big winter system swept in and had been dropping snow for a few days. The hills and trees were covered and a white blanket settled on the roof.
New tracks appeared in the snow. The local cats, our Dog “Buck”, deer, elk, the Blue Jays and grouse. The cars were covered too.
As night fell we were up to about 12″ of snow on the ground. It was enchanting as only dancing snowflakes on a winter night can make it. We sat on the cough and shared a glass of wine as the snow fell. The only thing missing was a fireplace. Soon we turned in for the night.
Sometime during the night I was awoken, my wife shaking me and whispering “there is someone trying to get in the house”. Usually it turns out to be nothing but a woodpecker looking for bugs but this time it was Oh Dark Thirty and there was definitely someone or something out there.
Creeping out of bed (we have to get some rugs on the oh so cold floors) and listening intently there was a pop or crack as something hit the house on the left side. Then another on the right then on both sides. The hair on my neck was standing straight up and that is saying a lot as that I really don’t have hat much hair. I crept up to the window to look and try to see who was there and then…
..There was a swoosh as the snow on the roof went sliding off. All the thumps and pops and cracks was the heavy snow blanket cracking here and there and breaking free of the metal roof under its own ever increasing weight.
Tonight’s problem solved. Tomorrow will be a time for a shovel (do I see a snow blower in our future?) Time to get back into a warm bed.
Great job! Keep up the good work!
